About Pender (T14)
O5,
later to be named Pender (T14), is a transient male who was
estimated to be born in
1962. He was often seen with an adult female Flores (T13), who was believed to
be his mother. In March 1976 both of them were captured along with many
other transient orcas. But due to public complaints, many of of the
orcas were released but Flores and
Pender were kept for scientific purposes. Both were first sent
to Seattle Marine Aquarium where they were tube fed every two days and later were radio-tagged after 55 days, both
orcas were released.
Flores and Pender were often encountered after their release and Flores gave birth to various calves. Unfortunately her last sighting was in 1998 and she is presumed dead from 2000. Pender is still alive and is often seen, but after his mother's death he is often sighted alone or in small groups.
