  About Splash (SWC-OO-9226)

Splash was the first orca to be born at Marineland Canada. Sadly he was born prematurly and he suffered from seizures and epilepsy. Fortunately it was kept under control by medicines, nonetheless he was moved to Sea World San Diego for better care and medical treatment at the early age of 2 years. He met many new orcas and settled in well,  with Corky II becoming his surrogate mother.

In 1995, while Splash was playing with Orkid, he had a seizure and rammed into one of the pool gates. Orkid and Kasatka soon helped him to stay at the surface and trainers moved him to the medical pool. This resulted in his lower jaw being damaged and although his wound was treated, he got an infection soon after and his teeth had to be removed. This meant he could not close his mouth completely anymore.

Despite his illness, Splash was a playful and attentive orca. He was a good performer, doing many spectacular tricks, even with trainers in the water. A week before his death, his appetite dropped and he was put on antibiotics. But he didn't show any sign of recovery and died in SeaWorld's medical pool, while Sumar and Orkid were by the gates.
