About
Skana
Skana
was one of the first orcas to be captured for dolphinariums. In
February 1967, 15 orcas were seine netted, five of them were kept at
Yukon Harbor until they were moved to Seattle Marine Aquarium. Once
arrived at the park, they were bought by other marine parks. Skana was
purchased by Vancouver Aquarium and was immediately moved to her new
home. Skana got used to her new environment quickly and was trained for
shows. By the end of 1968, she finally got a companion, Hyak2*, who was
a part of the Northern Resident orca community. Both of them got along
very well and soon became the stars at the parks. People from all over
the world came to see the two orcas.
Skana was one of the oldest orcas in captivity by the time of her death, although she was quite young when she died. Apparantly she got a mycotic infection, which is caused by fungi.
