  About Sharkan

Sharkan was one of the last orcas that were captured off the coast of Iceland. She was Marineland’s most successful breeder with her 3 calves, Shouka, Inouk and Wikie. All of them grew up under the great care of Sharkan and are all alive to this day. When the park’s only breeding male Kim II* died in 2005, trainers began to introduce the AI procedure to her. Sharkan was doing well with it and it was hoped that she would be pregnant with her next calf in near future.

Although she was quite dominant, she was not the dominant female of the park. She shared the dominancy role with Freya for some year but since the birth of Sharkan’s first calf, Shouka but she gave the role to Freya.

Sharkan was not only a great mother, she is also an excellent performer and shows off her talent in show performances. She suddently passed away on January 3 2009 from
an eye infection named, Bacillus Pyocyanique. Sharkan is now a grandmother with Wikie's first calf which was born in 2011.
  • Sharkan is possibly derived from Serkan meaning "leader" in Turkish
  • Pronunciation of Sharkan: "Shar-Kan"
  • Blood Type: 100% Icelandic
