About
Shamu
She
was captured to be a companion for Namu*, who
was accidentally caught some
months
before. Shamu did not get along with him and was purchased by SeaWorld San Diego for $75,000. The park
had just opened a year before so
Shamu soon was trained and
participated in
shows. She did very well and even allowed trainers to
enter the water with her. She gained many
new tank mates a couple of years after being on her own and got along
well with them. In August 1971, she passed away from Septicaemia and
Pyometra. She was so popular at Sea World, her name carries on as the
trade mark name for orcas at Sea World.
