About Florencia (T2) aka Pointed Nose Cow

Five transient orcas had been captured on March 1, 1970. The small pod was kept at Pedder Bay and consisted of 2 adult females, 1 adult male and 2 young females. The small pod all had head deformities and so they got some strange nicknames such as Scarredjaw cow, Pointed Nose Cow, etc. The young females, Chimo* and Knootka* were the first ones to be sold. They were bought by Sealand of the Pacific and left the bay on March 25. Soon Seven Seas purchased Pointednose Cow and Scarredjaw Cow but adult orcas went on a hunger strike and refused to eat any food offered to them.

On the 75th day after the capture, Scarredjaw cow was seen swimming around the bay and crashing into the logs. She ignored her keepers and continued with that behaviour.  She swallowed lots of sea water due to dehydration. While vets were called, the cow went crazy and rushed into the nets at full speed. She got stuck in the net and couldn't move any further. All attempts to help her failed and the cow finally allowed air bubbles escaping out of her mouth. She sank to the bottom and died.

Pointed Nose Cow and the other male, Charlie Chin were released a day or two after the incident with Scarredjaw. She was later re-named to Florencia (T002) and she is also a grandmother (see wild orcas for for more information on T2’s family)
