  About Nyar (SWF-OO-9303)

Nyar was born on New Year's Eve. During labour her mother, Gudrun* was assisted by another female Katina and her calf Taku*. Some months after her birth, the babies were seen playing together and were sometimes joined by Nyar's sister Taima*. Everything seemed to be fine, until trainers noticed that Nyar didn't make progress like other calves her age and she dhad problems swimming correctly.

Gudrun* also noticed the troubles her daughter had and tried to drown her several times. Trainers immediately separated the two. Blood test were done and revealed that Nyar had a weak immune system. She could catch harmless diseases very easily and die from them. It was also believed that Nyar had mental problems and as a result, she was never used in shows. She was sometimes put with her father, Tillikum, who was really gentle to her. When Gudrun* suffered a stillborn in 1996 and died from the birth complications, Nyar's health dropped. She had troubles breathing and despite the help of her trainers, her immune system failed and she died.
