  About Nootka V

Nootka V was one of the dominant females at Marineland. She performed many years at Marineland’s show pool, called King Waldorf Theater. The pool was very small for the number of orcas that have been kept there, so Nootka probably spent some time at the "warehouse", Marineland's indoor pool.

She became a retired performer in 1998 when she was moved to Friendship Cove, along with her tank mates. Shows weren't held at Friendship Cove, just some training and petting sessions were done. Some years ago, those were replaced by the Splash Sessions.

During her life in captivity, Nootka went through eight pregnancies. Many of her offspring survived the most critical days in life, but just two of them reached adulthood, Splash* and Neocia*. Nootka was a very good mother and cared for her calves very well, she was described as a very protective mother too. Sometimes Nootka also refused to nurse her calves, mostly this occured when tensions between her and Kiska appeared. Nootka was a moody orca, but she was the best performer at the park. Although it was difficult to work with her, she learned many behaviours in captivity.

Nootka sadly died during off peak season at Marineland in 2008, the cause of death has never been released.
