About
Nootka IV (SWF-OO-9301)
Nootka IV
was captured off the coast of Iceland in October 1982. She and 4 other
orcas were sent to Saedyrasafnid Aquarium before they were sold. Haida II*, Nootka
IV* and an unnamed male were purchased by Sealand of the
Pacific, which needed more orcas to replace their deceased ones.
Unfortunately the young male died just months after his arrival and Sealand wanted to breed orcas in future so they bought another young male and in November 1984 Tilikum arrived at the park. The three orcas performed at the park for several years. During the time many accidents with trainers occured; luckily no one was seriously hurt until 1991.
On February 20 1991, after a show Keltie Byrne, who was a trainer at Sealand, fell into the orca tank. Soon she was helped out of the water, when one of the orcas (it's not known who it was) grabbed her foot and she was pulled underwater. Various attempts were made to distract the orcas from their trainer but all of them failed. The orcas dragged her around the pool and after 10 minutes she had drowned. After that accident, no one was allowed to be in the water with the orcas.
All three orcas and the expected offspring were sold to SeaWorld. On December 24, Haida II* gave birth to her first calf Kyuquot. Nootka and Haida often attacked Tilikum when he was too close to the calf, so he was the first who was moved out. On February 4, 1992 Nootka* gave birth to a male calf. After some days the orca began to nurse, but he died on March 10, due to an infection.
By the end of the year the last season at Sealand Pacific ended and in January 1993, all 3 orcas moved out. Nootka arrived at SWF where she was reunited with Tilikum. They soon mated and Nootka expected her second calf, sadly the baby was born dead on August 18, 1994. Nootka was saddened by her loss but did recover with time but she unfortunately died herself on September 13, 1994.
