About
Nootka II
Nootka II
was captured in 1973 along with 3 other orcas.
It is believed that she was caught before in February 1967, when her
entire pod was captured, but she and several others have been released.
Until October 7 1973, she was held at Pedder Bay when Sealand of the Pacific purchased and transferred her. The park was searching for a mate for their resident male orca Haida*. Both were said to get along well, but unfortunately Nootka died on May 1st, 1974.
A breeding programme was set up but Nootka's death axed the plan. She died from a ruptured aorta, the reason for the injury has never released though. She was estimated to be in her thirties but her exact age is still a mystery, but apparantly she was an adult female.
