  About Nepo

Nepo and 11 other orcas were captured off the coast of British Columbia on a cold winters day. Nepo and five other orcas were kept, while the other 6 were released. Nepo and his companions were held in the bay until Marine Parks purchased them.

Nepo and another female who was later named Yaka, were bought by Marine World Africa in Redwood City. When they arrived, they both met another female, Kianu*, who had lived there since 1968. Kianu* immediately sparked interest in Nepo, who did not share the same feelings of her, Nepo preferred his capture mate, Yaka so there were a lot of tension between the females.

When the situation escalated, Nepo usually tried to calm down the girls. Kianu got more aggressive and was transferred in 1978 leaving Nepo and Yaka alone. Although both got along well, they never produced any calves. Nepo finally died of pneumonia 10 years after his capture.
