About
Miracle
On
August 2, 1977, a lone and young orca calf had been spotted in Menzies
Bay. The female orca was covered with algae and looked
like she was in
trouble and none of her pod members had
been seen. She was offered fish
and she took it without hesitation.
On August 8, it was obvious she needed help and the Vancouver Aquarium was called. Sealand of the Pacific was also informed because they were looking for a new female for their lone bull Haida*. After an investigation it was discovered she was covered with parasites and she was bleeding, also her flukes and dorsal fin were smothered with parasites. As she would have probably died in the wild, permits were given to capture her and move her to Sealand.
The young female was named Miracle due to her situation. She even had a bullet wound and cuts from propellers. Despite all these negative experiences the whale made with humans, she was said to be a trusting animal.
Her health condition was worse than the vets thought. Several times she sank to the bottom of the tank and she suffered from infections and ulcers. Once her heart stopped beating and she was actually clinically dead, but her strong will to live let her survive.
Miracle's condition improved and she got better. She met Haida and got along with him very well. Until 1982, she was his companion and the star during shows. She became a big female and almost reached sexually maturity.
Unfortunately she died in January 1982 after drowning; it is unknown how or why she drowned.
