About
Lolita (Tokitae)Lolita,
also known as Tokitae, is the oldest orca in captivity. She was
captured
at the age of 6 years from the coast of Washington, USA. She was caught
along with 80 other orcas. Many
orcas died, the others were released and 7 of them were sold to Marine
Parks. Lolita is now the only survivor from this capture and the only
southern resident orca being held in captivity.
A month after her capture, she was sent to the Miami Seaquarium to join the bull orca Hugo; Lolita was not kept with Hugo until 1972. They spent almost 10 years together, performing in a tiny tank. Since Hugo’s death in 1980, Lolita is alone; pacific white-sided dolpins are her companions now.
Although it was promised to build a new orca tank, constructions never began and Lolita still spends her days in a very small tank. Animal activists try to free her because of her poor living conditions. Trainers give her much attention and love, which could be the reason why she survived throughout the years.
