About
Kona II (SWF-OO-7701)
In
October 1977 several orcas were captured off the coast of Iceland and were moved
to Dolfinarium in Harderwijk in October 1977. Almost all of
them were sold by the end of the year, except for resident orca, Gudrun.
Kona II was sold to SeaWorld Orlando by the end of the year and soon she met a male orca called Ramu*, who just lost his pod mate Sandy*. Both got along well and often performed together. One year later they were joined by Kahana* and all three orcas performed together until Ramu's* death in 1982.
SeaWorld San Diego sent a young male named Kotar* to replace him and in 1984, Kahana traded places for pregnant Katina. Kona got along very well with her and in training sessions she taught Katina how to nurse a calf properly. When Katina went in labour, Kona even supported her and played the role as an auntie.
The baby girl, named Kalina* grew up quickly and was really close to Kona. The two often performed together and got along very well. SeaWorld purchased a new breeding male in 1987 and hoped that both females get pregnant. Kona showed signs of an illness later that year and suddenly passed away from an lung abscess on October 1977. She carried a foetus which was maximal 9 months old. Since she did so well with Kalina*, she probably would have been a great mother.
