About
KivaKiva was the 4th orca to be born at
Marineland and she was the one who lived the longest. After the birth,
Kiva started the first nursing attempts the same day, but like it was
with previous calves, Kiva tried to nurse from Corky's eye patches.
Even though Corky was trained to present her mammaries in order to help the calf nurse, the fast-moving Kiva still didn't find the right place. This resulted in the staff intervening and tube feeding the calf 3 days after the birth. Corky allowed trainers to touch and feed the calf and Kiva rapidly gained weight and grew stronger, but her blood test was still worrying.
Kiva became active and playful with her trainers and parents and after a month, Kiva got more independant from her mother and began swimming more on her own. Corky didn't like that and brought her baby back quickly and during the feeding sessions, she interrupted them and kept Kiva close to her side; Corky even played very rough with her, lifting her out of the water.
Although the number of daily feedings was decreased, there was no change in Corky's behaviours and Kiva was finally transferred to another tank. At first she seemed fine but the second day after the separation, her breathing increased and she died on the third day.
