About Kiska (KW-02-01-75)Kiska was
one of many orcas captured from Iceland during 1979 and has only been
bought once in her life. She, like many orcas started her captive life
in Sædyrasafnid and after being there only a
month, along wth three other orcas (Keiko*, Caren*, and
SAE-OO-C7906*), she was moved to Marineland Ontario.
When she arrived, she met the two resident orcas, Knootka* and Kanduke* and later met Nootka V* and Kandu VIII*. Like her previous tank mates, she has performed many years in a small pool, called King Waldorf's Theatre. Now she is a retired performer; however she sometimes joins in the Splash Sessions and Kiska is a very good performer, geting people completely wet during the shows.
Five times she has given birth to healthy calves and like Nootka’s*, all of them survived the first initial years but sadly, none of them reached maturity. Her oldest offspring was Hudson* and her most recent calf, Athena* died in Spring 2009.
After Athena's death, Kiska was left alone with Ikaika, who was moved to MLC in 2006 and there was hope that he will breed with her as soon as he reaches maturity. However, due to a court case with SeaWorld, Marineland lost custodity of Ikaika and he was moved back to SeaWorld in November 2011.
Kiska is now alone at Marineland and we await news on her progress.
