About
Kim II Kim
II
was a young male orca who was captured off the coast of
Iceland in October 1982 along with 4 other orcas. All 5 orcas went to Saedyrasafnid and
waited to be sold and it wasn't long before Kim and a young female,
later named Freya were bought by Marineland Antibes.
5 months later, they were moved to France and there, they both met a
resident
female,
called Betty*.
The three orcas got along well and soon performed alongside each other but unfortunately Betty died in 1987, leaving Kim and Freya alone. Marineland was seeking for more whales but at the time, Iceland were discussing to forbid orca captures and in 1989, 4 orcas were captured at the time the new law was brought in. Two of the orcas that had already been captured were already sold to Kamogawa Sea World and Marineland Antibes finally got the last two orcas, a female and a male. On January 12, 1990, Sharkan* and Tanouk* arrived at Marineland; Freya got along well with them but Kim* had some issues with Tanouk*, so those two were kept separated.
When Freya had reached sexual maturity, she soon became pregnant and was prgnant when the two new orcas arrived; she gave birth to Kim's first offspring in March 1991, unfortunately the baby was born dead. Kim* has been proven to sire calves and was kept with both females. This meant that Tanouk* was kept alone from that point onwards so it was decided to sell Tanouk* in 1995.
In 1993 the females gave birth around the same time, unfortunately Freya's baby was a stillbirth but Sharkan* gave birth to a healthy female called Shouka. Kim* was soon introduced to his daughter and when she got older, they often performed together. They developed a strong bond, but when Shouka reached maturity, she was moved to the USA.
Kim was really affected by the transfer and became less active. He put on lots of pounds and grew much bigger. Freya and Sharkan* gave birth to several calves through the years and Kim got along with all his calves, but never developed the close relationship to any of them like he had with Shouka.
Sadly, on November 23, 2005, Kim died of pneumonia.
