  About Kenau (SWF-OO-7602)

Kenau was captured off the Southeast coast of Iceland in October 1976, along with Gudrun* and both females were transferred to Dolfinarium Harderwijk a month later.

While Gudrun lived there for more than a decade, Kenau's stay was short and she was moved to Seaworld San Diego the same year. She met many orcas there and they all got along together. It wasn't long before she started to performed at Shamu Stadium (now the dolphin pool) and performing at Sea World Aurora during the summer seasons of 1979-1981.

Most of her time she performed with another female called Kandu V*. Both females got along quite well and were the star performers at Sea World San Diego and Kenau even did waterworks with her trainers, although she was known to be a very aggressive orca.

When she reached sexual maturity, she mated with SeaWorld's bull orca Winston* and she gave birth to her first calf on January 5, 1986; the baby appeared healthy and Kenau cared for her daughter. After some days the baby showed breathing troubles and was sent to the medical pool but unfortunately Kenau's first calf died of an heart attack a day after being moved.

Since Winston* died in 1986, Seaworld bought another pair of orcas in 1987, Corky II and Orky II*. Kenau soon mated with Orky* and was expecting her second calf in 1988. Before she could give birth she was moved to the new SW park in San Antonio, Texas and 9 months after her arrival, she gave birth to her second daugher, the calf was healthy and was named Kayla.

Kenau again showed her great maternal abilities and Kayla grew up into a lively young orca. Kenau mated again with the park's bull Kotar*, but she was moved to Orlando and suffered a miscarriage in January 1991;
Kenau's third calf was a male and due in 1992.. At Orlando she met many other adult females, but she fit in well into the group.

Unfortunately her stay was not long; she died on August 6 after she caught a bacterial pneumonia.
