About
Kayla (SWT-OO-8879) Kayla was the
first orca to be born at Sea World San Antonio were she met Kasatka,
Kotar and of course, her mother. She thrived at the park but sadly
moved to Ohio when she was only 2½ years old.
At Ohio, she met another young orca named Katerina who was born in Sea World Orlando 22 days before. The two orcas performed during season together at Ohio until 1994 when an orca from Orlando joined them, Winnie*. Kayla got on well with Winnie and were often seen together and continued to perform together until 1999 and they were moved back to San Antonio.
At San Antonio, Kayla and Winnie* met a dominant female Haida II* and it wasn't long before Winnie* was sharing this role; this made Kayla one of the more submissive females. She never fought for dominance when Haida* died, but after Winnie’s* death, Kayla took over the role as a dominant female.
She was doing really well and ran the park with all the young orcas and when Keet arrived at San Antonio in 2004, both got along really well and soon mated with each other and it wasn't long before Kayla got pregnant and gave birth to her first calf, Halyn*. Unfortunately she rejected her calf, due to a lack of experience with orca calves and a decision was made to move her to Orlando in order to learn how to care for a calf. This decision was likely to have been made to the fact she was expecting her second calf but sadly, soon after her move Kayla suffered a miscarriage in March 2007. No one knows if SeaWorld plans to get her pregnant once again but it’s also uncertain if Kayla will ever return to San Antonio.
Kayla has integrated very well into the Orlando group and she often performs with the younger orcas. She has been very gentle with the youngsters and the elders. She seems to get along very well with Katina and used to do most of the "double waterworks" with her.
