About
Kasatka (SWC-OO-7804) Like many orcas, Kasatka
was captured in 1978 along with several other orcas and was sent to Saedyrasafnid
where she was trained and waited to be sold on. It wasn't long before
she was
purchased by Sea World and along with 3 other orcas, she was moved to
Sea World San Diego she met the two resident orcas, Winston* and Canuck
II*.
Kasatka proved to be a reliable performer and once she was accustomed to her new environment, she was moved to Ohio to become the main performer, alongside her old friend, Katina. Katina and Kasatka performed together for 4 years at Ohio before Katina became pregnant with her first calf and was moved to Orlando. As a result, Katina was replaced with Kahana* and Kasatka was again reunited with an orca she was captured with. These orcas performed together until 1987 at Ohio and when the newest park opened in San Antonio, Kasatka was sent there and it was here she met Kotar* again and Kenau*.
During her time at San Antonio, Kasatka learned how to raise a calf as Kenau had a baby girl in November 1988 named Kayla. When Kasatka was sexually mature, she mated with Kotar and was soon expecting her first calf. She was sent to San Diego in 1990 and has not moved since.
Kasatka has been the matriarch of the SeaWorld San Diego pod since moving back in 1990, but she is not the dominant female there; she shares that role with Orkid. In 1991, she gave birth to her first calf in front of a large crowd and this calf was later named Takara.
Kasatka is a very gentle and protective female towards her offspring. She was the first orca to be successfully AI’ed in 2000 and 18 months later she gave birth to a healthy male orca named Nakai.
Despite her gentle personality she can be quite aggressive towards tainers and she was involved in many incidents with humans. Luckily no one was seriously hurt but as of now waterworks are stopped with her, although she had great potential.
She knows many behaviours and is a really good performer.
