  About Kanduke  (SWF-OO-8701)

Kanduke (T009) was one of a few transient orcas captured for marine parks. On August 16, 1975, him and his pod mate Nootka III* were caught and soon moved to their new homes.

Kanduke arrived at Marineland Canada and was soon joined by Kandu II*, the park's resident male orca and a female who arrived 4 days before him, Knootka*; she was also a transient orca.

Kanduke probably spent some months at Marineland's indoor pool, the warehouse before performing in the main pool. At first, the three orcas were alone at the park but then Marineland purchased many young orcas in 1978 and 1979. Even though Marineland had new orcas, Kanduke*, Knootka*and Kandu II* remained the only performers at the park, until the others were trained or sold on. When Kandu II* died, Nootka* and Kanduke* were the only performers left.

In 1987, SeaWorld bought Kanduke and he was moved to Sea World Orlando. It was here he met  2 adult females and soon mated with both of them. Along with the females. he met another young bull, Kotar* and the males didn't get along with each other and occasionally fought. One day it even became worse when Kotar* injured Kanduke's genitals; the two males were permanentely separated after that incident and Kotar* was sent to the new park in San Antonio.

In 1988 Kanduke's first daughter, Katerina* was born to Katina and 1987 Gudrun gave birth to his second daughter Taima*.

Kanduke was a rather moody orca and didn't perform very often at Shamu Stadium, most of the time he was kept in the back pools. It's not known if he ever met any of his daughters.

Due to his transient blood he was a long and very bulky orca and trainers were not sure if he knew his own strength, that's why he was probably kept apart from his offspring.

Kanduke died on September 20, 1990 after he showed changes in behaviours in the days before his death.  Unfortunately his last surviving daughter passed away in June 2010, but she has given birth to 3 calves; Kanduke's grandchildren (two of which are still alive).
