About
Kandu VII (KW-01-01-178)
Kandu VII
was captured with 4 other orcas and in that group, he was the longest
and
the oldest orca. While 3
other orcas were sold immediately, Kandu and Junior*,
another male
remained at Saedyrasafnid Aquarium untill December 1986.
They arrived at Marineland and met the resident orcas there, Kanduke*, Kiska and Nootka V*. Kanduke was soon sold to SeaWorld but the others remained there for many years.
Kandu was well liked by the females and soon Nootka* expected Kandu's first calf. Kandu's first offspring was a male named Splash* (or Katak). Soon Kiska also got pregnant and Kandu's family started to grow and in 10 years he sired 9 calves; unfortunately out of 14 calves , no one survived to this day.
Kandu met many of his sons and daughters and was very gentle to them. He was good company for his daughter Malik* when her mother, Nootka*, became too aggressive towards her. When Neocia* was there in the winter season, the females often fought over Kandu.
Kandu performed most of his life at Marineland's old orca stadium, King Waldorf Theatre. When he was not performing, he spent most of his time in one of the tiny back pools which were barely bigger than him; he was often very lethargic and just floated in that pool.
When Marineland built a bigger tank for the orcas, Kandu became more active but still kept his laziness trait. He was a retired performer at Friendship Cove and wasn't used for shows, except for feeding and petting sessions; Kandu was preferred them due to his gentle character.
He passed away surprisingly during Marineland's off season on December 21, 2005.
