  About Kandu V (SWC-OO-7706)
Kandu V was captured along with one other orca (still yet to be worked out who it was) at the end of September 1977. After staying a week in Sædyrasafnid, she and the other orca were soon sent to Dolfinarium Harderwijk. It wasn't long before she went on a long journey across the Atlantic Ocean. She was still a young orca when she arrived at SeaWorld San Diego.

Kandu probably spent some time at the "Petting Pool" along with other young orcas shortly after her transfer. But after her training was done, she eventually performed at the main pool where she was joined by Kenau* and Winston*. Kandu was a good performer, but she was also a moody orca. Waterworks were done with her but she showed aggressions to her trainers more than once.

When she became sexually mature, she mated with Winston* and in 1984, she got pregnant with her first offspring. Unfortunately she gave birth to a dead calf on January 31, 1986.

Almost one year after, SeaWorld got 2 new orcas and Kandu immediately got along with the male Orky II* and soon became pregnant with her second calf. On September 23, 1988, she gave birth to a female named Orkid. Kandu was a good and protective mother, so she wasn't enthused when Corky II, one of the other females showed interest in the new calf.

On August 21, 1989, Kandu was swimming laps in the back pool, while Orkid and Corky performed during a show. Kandu entered the show pool with some speed and rammed into Corky with her mouth open. Corky was OK after the attack, with a bruise or two, but sadly Kandu broke her jaw and started bleeding shortly after the attack.

She immediately swam back to the back pool, where she died from severe blood loss;   Orkid was by her side and was probably shocked. The reason for this attack has never been clarified, it could have been happened because of jealousy but such a case has never been reported in the wild and was, and still is the first of its kind in captivity.
