About
Kandu (94)
After
various attempts to capture orcas for aquariums, a small pod was
finally caught in February 1967. While 5
of them were released and two drowned,
5 of
the others went on a long way to marine parks.
At first they were held at the Seattle Marine Aquarium until some of them were moved to other parks. Kandu was the only one who stayed at the aquarium, while the others were sent out in 1967. In 1969, Kandu was finally moved to SeaWorld to join her former pod members.
The park already had 3 orcas, which were kept in a very tiny pool. During the summer opening at Sea World Aurora, Kandu joined Kilroy* and performed until the winter when she was moved back to Sea World San Diego.
In 1971, a new tank was built and all the orcas immediately moved there. Sadly Kandu died, most likely at Sea World Aurora and never had a chance to see the new pool.
