  About Kahana (SWF-OO-7803)

Kahana was a young female who was captured off the southeast coast of Iceland. After staying at Sædyrasafnid for a short period of time, she was sent to SeaWorld Florida, where she joined Kona II* and Ramu* and performed there many years.

When Ramu* died in 1982, Kotar*, an orca she was captured with, arrived to take Ramu's* place. Until 1984, those 3 orcas performed alongside each other and Katina was moved to Sea World Orlando in October 1984, because she was pregnant and Kahana took her place at Sea World Aurora.

For many years, she and Kasatka spent the summers at Ohio and the winters at SWC or SWF. When Kasatka was transferred to the new Texas park, Kahana was left alone at SWO. In 1989 she was eventually joined by Samoa*, then Kahana was also sent to SWT to be a future mate for Kotar.

Soon after her arrival, she became pregnant by Kotar* and unfortunately she miscarried on November 6, 1990. On May 14th, Kahana slammed her head in one of the pool walls, this caused a broken skull and severe blood loss. Trainers and vets were at a loss with her behaviour. Later a necropsy disclosed a tumour, which explained her odd behaviour.
