  About Hyak II

Along with 6 pod members, Hyak II was captured off Pender Harbour from Canadian waters. The orcas were kept and lived at the harbour for some weeks or even months whislt they awaited to be transferred on. Natsidalia*, an adult female was believed to be Hyak's mother, because he was often accompanied by her. Both of them were purchased by Vancouver Aquarium.

Sadly Natsidalia* died in November in the harbour, it's not known if Hyak left the harbour before or after her death. When he arrived at Vancouver, he met another female, Skana* who was captured a year prior.  Both of them got along well and they often joined each other during daily performances.

When Skana* died in 1980, the aquarium purchased 4 orcas captured in Iceland. All of them arrived in 1980, but Vancouver Aquarium only kept Bjossa* and Finna*, while the others were sold to other parks. Hyak immediately got along well with the newcomers and looked after the much younger whales; he was even seen swimming in mother-calf-position with Finna*.

In 1987, he successfully impregnated Bjossa* and she got pregnant with her first calf; unfortunately the baby didn't survive the first weeks after birth. After that loss Bjossa* and Hyak continued to mate with each other and she became pregnant for the second time. Bjossa* was already far in her second pregnancy when Hyak died in February 1991 from pneumonia.

He never met his longest living offspring K'yosha*, who also didn't make it and died after some months.
