  About Hugo

Hugo was caught off Vaughn Bay in March  1967 along with more than 12 pod members. Only Hugo* was known to be kept however it was thought that Lupa* was caught with him but nothing to support this has been found. Hugo was soon purchased by Miami Seaquarium and was put in a very tiny pool (today it is the manatee pool). As he kept on growning, a new tank was built.

Even though the new tank was complete in 1970, he remained in the smaller pool until his new pool mate, Lolita / Tokitae had settled in. The two orcas were first kept separated but as they were calling each other, it was decided to put them together; Hugo even broke one of the windows of his tank, because of frustration.

Hugo was a moody orca and often showed aggression to his trainers. He occasionally performed alongside Lolita, but it was obvious that Lolita was the more easy going whale.  On March 4, 1980 Hugo died of an brain aneurysm, leaving Lolita alone, who is still alive to this day.
