About
Hoi Wai / Suzie
(OO7901)In
October 1977 several orcas were captured off the coast of Iceland and
were moved to Dolfinarium in
Harderwijk in October 1977. Almost all of
them were sold by the end of the year, except for resident orca, Gudrun.
At the Dutch Dolfinarium Harderwijk, two of the new females got their names, Peanuts and Frya (Winnie). Along with Frya, Peanuts was sent to Windsor Safari Park in spring 1979 but both orcas still belonged to SeaWorld and Peanuts was destined for Ocean Park in Hong Kong. Due to an argument between SeaWorld and Windsor, she was moved to Clacton Dolphinarium after only being at Windsor for a few months. But after the pier got damaged by a storm, Peanuts was rushed back to Windsor Safari Park on New Year's day before finally moved to Ocean Park on January 27, 1979.
She was renamed once again, this time to Hoi Wai. She was the first orca at the Dolphinarium and the very first one in China. Until 1989, she performed on her own or was accompanied by dolphins. In 1989 she finally got an orca companion, when Bubba was moved to Ocean Park. Unfortunately he died in 1991 and Hoi Wai was alone again.
She was still the star at the park though and performed for many season until April 18, 1997, when she stopped eating and had digestion problems. Two days later she gained her appetite and was doing better yet her stituation got worse on April 21 when she died from several blood loss in her intestines.
