About
Halyn (SWT-OO-0576) Hayln
was born at
SeaWorld San Antonio
but was rejected by her mother, Kayla,
shortly after the birth. She was soon transferred to SeaWorld's
Animal Care Area, where she was hand-reared for many months.
Here, a female bottlenose dolphin was introduced briefly for company and she was hand fed a special formula; a mix of vital ingredients and some of Kayla's own milk. At first, she was named "K-calf" until January 2006, she was officially named Halyn.
Many keepers bottle-fed her and cared for the little one 24-hours a day, away from public eyes. She was fed every two hours and weighed daily to determine her feed. She survived the first critical weeks and grew up to a young and playful female orca. At the age of three months, she was moved back to her birthplace, the Shamu Stadium. She watched the other orcas through the gates and even interacted with them.
In 2007 Halyn met her father Keet, who is a very laid-back and lazy orca. She got along very well with him and tried to play with him all the time. As the months went by she was also ready to join Keet in shows and she was doing really well. Her training was making progress and she also learned waterwork behaviours. Sadly in June 2008 her behaviours changed and she died unexpectedly and quickly from encephalitis.
Raising Halyn has taught SeaWorld how to care for newborn orcas and what was learnt with Halyn has helped Adán grow up into a fine young orca (and for future hand raised orcas).
