About Haida II (SWT-OO-9376)Haida was captured along with 2 other orcas, Nootka IV* and Freya. All three were sent to Saedyrasafnid Aquarium in Iceland and Haida and Nootka IV* were soon bought by Sealand of the Pacific along with an unnamed male.
Not too long after the transfer the young male passed away, leaving Haida and Nootka alone. Another male was bought the following year and the young Tilikum arrived at the park. In 1990, Haida and Nootka both became pregnant by Tilikum and Sealand joyously awaited the births of the calves.
Unfortunately an incident stopped the ancipation. Oon February 20, 1991, Katie Byrne, one of the orcas' trainer, fell into the tank. While she was swimming back to the platform, the orcas swam up to her and dragged her around the pool. All attempts to rescue her failed and after 10 minutes, she drowned.
Haida might have shown some aggression towards her trainer due to her pregnancy, but none of the orcas intended to kill. They probably just played with her, because a trainer never entered the water with them, so the orcas might thought she was just a "toy". As a result of this event, in September 1991, Sealand closed and the whales were up for sale.
On Christmas Eve in 1991, Haida finally had her first calf, Kyuquot. Haida was overprotective of her calf and Tilikum was mostly kept in the tiny back pool. He was the first to be sold to SeaWorld. In 1993 Nootka, Haida and Kyuquot followed him to Sea World. Mother and son arrived at the San Antonio park, where they joined the other orcas there. Haida became the dominant orca at San Antonio where she soon got pregnant by Kotar and gave birth to another calf; sadly the baby died some months after birth.
Since Haida was very dominant, she decided if there was a show or not, usually all the other whales followed her. When Winnie arrived, luckily both got along and performed together. On July 30, 2001, her behaviours changed and she was put on 24-hour watch. She even got antibiotics but she didn't respond to the treatment and died on August 1.
