About
Haida
In
October 1968, over 25 orcas were netted, including the infamous J1 /
Ruffles*. Only 5 orcas were chosen to be taken into captivity , one of
which was a juvenile orca. Haida
first attended a travelling boat show and later was soon purchased by Sealand of the Pacific.
The park wanted to start a breeding programme for orcas with Haida being the breeding male and over a decade he was paired with many different females, Chimo and Knootka being the first ones; sadly none of them were kept or survived at the aquarium long enough to reach sexual maturity. After the death of Chimo, two older females were purchased in 1973 and 1974 respectively, but again, none of the females survived long after capture.
His last mate was Miracle, a young female that was rescued; she was close to sexually maturity when she died. Haida was left with no offspring, although some mating activity was going on between him and his mates.
Haida was a good performer, but like any other orca in captivity he refused some signals at times. He was even described as depressed at times.
On October 3, 1982, Haida died from a bacterial lung infection.
