  About Goro / (O-5)

Goro* and 3 other orcas were captured in October 1985; three of them were released shortly after capture but Goro and the female, Nami*, went to Taiji Whale Museum. Nami* remained at the park while Goro* was moved to Nanki Shirahama Adventure World in November 1985. It was here he met Benkei* and Ruka*, who arrived there some months before.

Goro* was very young at capture and probably stayed in the back pools whilst he was trained for shows. All three of them were the stars at the park until 1989 when Benkei* died in February of 1989 and the park was searching for new orcas. In 1990 new orcas arrived at the park, Ai* and Ran*. Both of them settled in quickly and soon performed alongside Ruka* and Goro*.

After Ai's* death in 1995, the park seeked for more orcas again and when five orcas were captured in Taiji Bay in 1997, three of them were purchased by Adventure World. An adult female and 2 young males were chosen and arrived the day after capture; just one the males survived the first months of captivity. This survivor was named Kyu* but was kept in the back pools until he participated in shows in 1999. Goro* got along well with the females and Kyu* and was often seen with them. In 2000 Ruka* suddenly died; the park again just had only 3 orcas.

It was thought that Goro* might mate with Ran* when she became sexually mature, but for unknown reasons Ran* carried a calf sired by Kyu*. Unfortunately it died along with its parents in 2004. Goro* was left alone and after more than 19 years in captivity; he died on January 21, 2005.

It was rumoured that he might have left his home to be a companion for Ku* at Port of Nagoya Public Aquarium or Nami* at Taiji Whale Museum, but his death axed any plans that were probably made. Goro* was a gentle giant, he was bulky and rather short for an orca. He did waterworks with his trainers and it has never been reported that he harmed any of his trainers.
