About
FinnaFinna*
was captured in November 1980 along with Bjossa* and was sent to
Saedyrasafnid Aquarium in
Iceland. Bjossa*, Finna*, Vigga* and Benkei II* were bought by
Vancouver
Aquarium but just Bjossa* and Finna* remained at the park. They met the
park's bull orca Hyak II*;
the three orcas got along really well.
Finna* was actually believed to be a female, that's why he was kept. Although the park kept 2 bull orcas, it has never been reported that the orcas fought.
The female Bjossa* soon became pregnant by Hyak* twice, but none of her calves survived. When Hyak* died, the trainers hoped Finna* would continue to sire calves. When he reached sexual maturity, he impregnated Bjossa* and she gave birth to her third calf on March 8, 1995; sadly the calf died right after the birth. Bjossa* was put on birth control after her third unsuccessful pregnancy.
The Vancouver Aquarium planned to sell Finna* to another park in order to get a female companion for Bjossa*. But plans changed when Finna* passed away from an infection and pneumonia, just like his tank mate Hyak*, some years before.
Finna* was a well-trained orca and there was no reported aggression towards his trainers or the other orcas; but trainers never entered the water with him. He will be greatly missed by trainers and visitors who got to met him.
