  About Chappy / チャッピー

In August 1970, the biggest orca capture occured. Over 80 orcas were netted and 7 of the orcas were taken from the nets and moved to Seattle Aquarium's holding pool for recently captured orcas.

Here, all 7 orcas waited to be sold on to their new homes and were given basic training. Out of the 7 orcas, two orcas were bought by Kamogawa Sea World, who wanted to be the first park to display orcas in Japan.

The two orcas who that were chosen were Chappy and Jumbo* who moved to Japan a month after capture.  The orcas soon adapted well to their new environment and became very popular. Once they were trained, they perfomed in daily shows with dolphins.

In 1972, a young orca was harpooned and was rushed to Kamogawa for care but was later moved to
Okhotsk in Russia. It's not known if Chappy ever meet the new orca.

In April 1974 he died from periostitis, an inflammation of his lumbar bone, leaving Jumbo alone.
