About
Caren / カレン
In October 1979, 4 young orcas were captured off the
southeast coast of
Iceland. All four orcas,
King*, Caren*, Keiko*
and an
unnamed female*
were immediately taken to Saedyrasafnid Aquarium where they awaited to
be sold. It wasn't long before all four orcas were purchased and were
later moved
to Marineland Ontario (except for King).
Marineland soon sold Caren and the unnamed female* to Kamogawa Sea World but sadley the young female died before their move so Caren's transfer was delayed whilst Kamogawa searched for another orca; they managed to get King* who was at the time in Germany. King* and Caren were finally moved in February 1980 and arrived at their new home.
Both were the star performers at the park and since keeping orcas in Japan was still something rare and new, they were very popular. Both got along well and spent most of their time together. Unfortunately King* died on October 3, 1983, leaving Caren all alone for two years.
In November 1985, Caren got some new company when 2 young orcas called Patty* and Bingo arrived. Sadly 2 years later Caren died on May 4, 1987. The cause of death was a decease in the number of white blood cells, named agranulocytosis.
