About
BelenA
young female was captured on January 6, 1988, she was soon sent to
Mundo Marino, where she was given the name Belén. Soon after
her
transfer she met the park's resident male, Milagro. Both got along well
and after Belen was trained for shows, both orcas were used during
daily performances. When Milagro died in 1991, Mundo Marino was seeking
for another orca to replace him. In September 1992, 2 orcas stranded on
a beach not too far away from Mundo Marina (actually the orcas were
forced to strand). Both orcas arrived at the facility, but the older
male died after one day in captivity, it's not known if Belen ever met
him. The other male was named Kshamenk and became Belen's future tank
mate. Both of them got along very well and when Kshamenk and Belen
reached sexually maturiry, they soon mated with each other. Belen got
pregnant by the end of 1996. In February 1998 she went into labour but
unfortunately the baby was born death. She finally got pregnant again
in fall 1999. Sadly Belen died on February 2000 and carried a 4-month
old fetus.
