About
Ahab In
October 1968, over 25 orcas were netted, including the infamous J1 /
Ruffles*. Only 5 orcas were chosen to be taken into captivity, including
two large males. The two large males were purchased by the US Navy and
moved 17 days after purchase. The two orcas were moved to the
Californian base in order to undergo training and there it was, Ahab
was named.
A year later, Ahab and Ishmael* were moved to Hawaii once their initial training was over. It wasn't long before both orcas attempted to escape. Even though they made several attempts, it was only Ishmael* who managed to escape in 1971.
Ahab continued to work for the Navy until 1974 when he died sometime during the year. Neither the date of death nor the cause of his passing was released.
